About The Princess Diaries
The Princess Diaries (2001) follows shy Mia Thermopolis learning she is Genovian heir under Queen Clarisse, opening August 3, 2001 for Disney from Garry Marshall. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) forces Mia to marry in 30 days or lose the crown, opening August 11, 2004 with Chris Pine debuting.
Both films share Mia, Clarisse and Joe without recaps. A third film has been in development since 2022 with Adele Lim to direct and Hathaway to return, but the script was scrapped and restarted after a July 2026 breakthrough. Julie Andrews confirmed August 2026 she will not return. Watch 1 then 2, then wait on 3 once dated.
Good to know
Release order is story order, with the sequel set years after the first school year. Do not start with Royal Engagement, since it assumes you know the foot pop, the pear screen and the parliament vote. The third has no shoot date, with Lim rewriting from summer 2026. Treat the duology as waiting, with Genovia law still the cliffhanger for part three.
