About Quo Vadis
Quo Vadis adapts Henryk Sienkiewicz's 1896 novel about Vinicius, Lygia and Nero's Rome. The 1924 silent version came first, then the 1951 Mervyn LeRoy epic with Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr at three hours. The 1985 six episode miniseries with Klaus Maria Brandauer plays it as Theatre, and the 2001 Jerzy Kawalerowicz Polish film became Poland's Oscar submission.
Each version starts from the novel rather than from the last film. The 1951 film earned eight Oscar nominations and defines the story for most viewers. Release order shows how Nero shifts from Ustinov's camp to Brandauer's weary actor across 50 years.
Good to know
Watch in release order with each version as a fresh start, since no plot carries over between them. The 1951 epic is the famous one, while the 1985 and 2001 versions suit completists chasing fidelity to Sienkiewicz. Earlier 1901 and 1913 silents survive in fragments for historians. No new adaptation has been announced.
