About Rene Clair
Rene Clair shaped early sound comedy with songs, chases and Paris charm. Under the Roofs of Paris from 1930 follows a street singer torn between a sweet girl and street toughs, built around title song streets. Le Million from 1931 follows a poor painter chasing a lost lottery ticket through coats, chases and an opera stage finale.
The Grand Maneuver from 1955 closes the run with a cavalry officer betting he can win a lady before maneuvers end, mixing uniforms, balls and witty vows. The three share music, movement and gentle satire of love and money. Watch Under the Roofs of Paris, then Le Million, then The Grand Maneuver in release order to trace Clair from sound dawn to color grace.
Good to know
Watch Under the Roofs of Paris from 1930, then Le Million from 1931, then The Grand Maneuver from 1955 in release order since craft and tone grow lighter. Plots stand alone, but the music chase link makes one neat phase. Start with Le Million for the fastest farce. Expect songs, street crowds and romantic bets rather than hard drama. Street crowds sing through each bet.
