About Rio
Rio from 2011 follows pet macaw Blu as he flies to Rio de Janeiro and meets Jewel while smugglers chase them through carnival streets. Rio 2 from 2014 moves the family to the Amazon three years later against loggers and the Nigel return. Both track one family move from cage to wild.
Watch the 2011 film then the 2014 sequel in order. The second assumes you know Blu, Jewel and the kids setup from the first flight. Rio 3 is officially in development with Saldanha involved but has no date, plus a Nico and Pedro spinoff once reported with no release.
Good to know
Release order matches story order with a three year jump between the two family films. The films run as musical comedy first with conservation talk in the background for kids. Treat the 2014 film as the latest chapter rather than a finale until the third film actually moves forward. Jesse Eisenberg voices Blu and Anne Hathaway voices Jewel across both films.
