About Ritwik Ghatak
Ritwik Ghatak filmed Partition as sound and rupture. Ajantrik from 1958 loves a taxi as companion, Bari Theke Paliye from 1958 sends a boy to Calcutta. Meghe Dhaka Tara from 1960 sacrifices Nita for family, Komal Gandhar from 1961 splits refugee theatre lovers, Subarnarekha from 1962 follows three refugees to violence.
The three form the Partition trilogy on cultural union. Titash Ekti Nadir Naam from 1973 watches a fishing river dry, Jukti Takko Aar Gappo from 1974 turns self critique as swansong. Ghatak died in 1976 after eight features. Nita I want to live cry fuses landscape and voice.
Good to know
Watch in release order, with the trilogy at the center. Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar and Subarnarekha share displacement more than plot, but the sequence builds. Subarnarekha plays most uncompromising, save it for third. Titash runs long on village generations. Start with Meghe Dhaka Tara for the core, then Komal Gandhar for music.
