About Ryusuke Hamaguchi
Ryusuke Hamaguchi builds films out of long conversations, rehearsals and chance meetings. His graduation feature Passion from 2008 sets up the themes, then the five hour Happy Hour from 2015 follows four women in Kobe through work and marriage strain. Asako I and II from 2018 turns a lookalike romance into a study of memory.
Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and Drive My Car both arrived in 2021. The first is a three part anthology about coincidence, the second adapts Haruki Murakami and won international prizes. Evil Does Not Exist from 2023 moves the talk to a forest village facing a campsite plan, and All of a Sudden from 2026 continues his festival run.
Good to know
There is no shared story here, so release order is the viewing order. Happy Hour runs over five hours, so plan it across two nights rather than one sitting. Drive My Car runs just under three hours and adapts a short story, not the full Murakami collection. All of a Sudden premiered at Cannes in 2026 and is still rolling out, so streaming dates vary by country. Start with Drive My Car if you want one film first.
