About Samuel Fuller
Samuel Fuller (1912-1997) was a crime reporter and WWII infantryman turned writer-director, famous for blunt low-budget films on taboo subjects. His best-known titles include The Steel Helmet (1951), Pickup on South Street (1953), Shock Corridor (1963), The Naked Kiss (1964) and the autobiographical war film The Big Red One (1980).
Each film stands alone, so watch in release order. This list covers the essential features in the sequence they were made, with a short note on why each one matters. White Dog (1982), shelved after controversy, effectively ended his American directing career.
Good to know
Fuller died in 1997, so the filmography is complete. White Dog was shot in 1981, shelved by Paramount, and barely released in the US. The Big Red One exists in a longer 2004 reconstruction that restores nearly 50 minutes; either cut works for this order. Pickup on South Street and Shock Corridor are the best starting points for newcomers.
