About Sarah Polly

Sarah Polly directed her first feature, Away from Her, in 2006, adapting an Alice Munro story about a marriage strained by Alzheimer disease. Julie Christie earned an Oscar nomination for it, and Polly earned one for the adapted screenplay. Take This Waltz followed in 2011, a Toronto marriage drama starring Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen that split critics on its view of infidelity.

Stories We Tell arrived in 2012 as a wry documentary about Polly's own family secrets, and it landed on many year-end best lists. Women Talking followed in 2022, a hayloft debate among Mennonite women after assaults in their colony, and it won Polly the Oscar for adapted screenplay. Watch the four in release order. Each film stands alone, so the order shows her range growing rather than a plot continuing.

Good to know

Release order is the only sensible order here, since the four films share no characters or continuity. Stories We Tell is a documentary, so expect interviews and home-movie reconstruction instead of a scripted plot. Polly also wrote the Alias Grace miniseries, which this guide leaves out as television. No new feature has been dated as of October 2026, though a Bell Jar adaptation has been discussed.
