About Scary Movie

Scary Movie began in 2000 with Keenen Ivory Wayans directing the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer parody around Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks. The sequel in 2001 moved to the haunted mansion, and part 3 in 2003 from David Zucker pivoted to Signs and The Ring with Charlie Sheen. Parts 4 in 2006 and 5 in 2013 continued under new directors with shrinking returns.

The sixth film was directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon, Shawn, Keenen Ivory and Craig Wayans with Rick Alvarez, so the family that left the franchise after part 2 came back for it. It is billed as a spiritual sequel to the first two films and follows Cindy and her friends Ray Wilkins and siblings Shorty and Brenda Meeks as the masked killer from the original resurfaces.

It opened at the Paramount Theatre in Los Angeles on June 3, 2026 and was released theatrically in the United States by Paramount Pictures on June 5, 2026. Reviews were generally negative, but the film grossed $231.9 million against a $30 million budget and became the second highest grossing film in the series after the original.

Good to know

Watch one through six in release order, since the friendship between Cindy and Brenda and the killer callbacks assume the sequence.

The Zucker era from part 3 plays broader than the Wayans originals, so expect a style shift midway. The sixth film is the most Wayans movie since part 2 in tone, and it treats the original pair as its leads, which is why the original is the better entry point.

Part 6 is the newest entry and it is already the second highest grossing film in the series, so expect people to recommend it out of order. It does not need to be watched first.
