About Spawn
Spawn follows Al Simmons, a murdered operative who returns from Hell as a Hellspawn bound to Malebolgia. The 1997 film with Michael Jai White covers that origin in 96 minutes and earned about 88 million dollars worldwide against a 40 million budget. The HBO animated series ran 18 episodes across three seasons from 1997 to 1999 with Keith David voicing Simmons, and it stays closer to the comic tone.
Todd McFarlane and Blumhouse have developed a new King Spawn film since 2015, with Jamie Foxx attached at various points and a director search reported in 2024 and 2025. It has no release date yet, so the 1999 cartoon finale remains the current endpoint.
Good to know
Watch the film first, then the animated series, since neither assumes the other and both restart the origin. The cartoon is TV-MA with strong violence and language, while the film is PG-13, so expect a tone shift between them. The reboot has cycled through writers and dates without locking one, so its list entry stays yearless until Blumhouse sets a real date.
