This Is Spinal Tap from 1984 is the mockumentary that defined the form, following England's loudest band through a disastrous American tour filmed by Marty DiBergi. Made for little money with mostly improvised dialogue, it grew from a flop into one of the most quoted comedies ever made.
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues opened September 12, 2025, with Reiner directing and Guest, McKean and Shearer all back for one last concert in New Orleans. Elton John and Paul McCartney drop in. See the original first. The sequel assumes you know every riff it is replaying.
Good to know
Release order is story order. The sequel is set 41 years after the original, matching the real gap, so there is nothing to reorder. One caveat: the sequel works best as a reunion lap for people who love the original, and critics were split on it. Keep expectations in check and treat the 1984 film as the main event.
