About Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kubrick directed thirteen features between 1953 and 1999, starting with the low budget war allegory Fear and Desire, then the noir pictures Killers Kiss in 1955 and The Killing in 1956. Paths of Glory arrived in 1957 and Spartacus in 1960, followed by Lolita in 1962 and Dr. Strangelove in 1964.
2001: A Space Odyssey opened in 1968 and changed science fiction film craft. A Clockwork Orange followed in 1971, Barry Lyndon in 1975, The Shining in 1980, Full Metal Jacket in 1987, and Eyes Wide Shut in 1999 after his death. Watch in release order, since each film reuses and refines tools from the last.
Good to know
These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. Fear and Desire was disowned by Kubrick and survives only through restored prints, while Spartacus is the one work for hire he did not initiate. The Shining differs sharply from Stephen Kings novel, which King has discussed for decades. Start with The Killing or Paths of Glory if thirteen films feels like too many.
