About Blake's 7
Blake's 7 (1978 to 1981) is Britain's cynical answer to Star Wars: Roj Blake's rebels flee the Federation aboard the Liberator across four series that kill main characters without sentiment. Blake himself exits after series 2, leaving Paul Darrow's Avon to carry the show's cold center.
Broadcast order is the only order; the seasons chain escapes, betrayals and dwindling crews toward one of television's bleakest finales. The effects are charmingly cheap and the ideas are not: each series raises the moral cost. The final episode's last minutes are legendary, so go in unspoiled if at all possible.
Good to know
The series 2 finale changes the show permanently, which is the point of no return for new viewers: past it, you are committed. Avon dominates the later series so thoroughly that some fans treat him as the real lead. Revivals have been discussed for decades without filming, so the 1981 finale stands. The Big Finish audios continue the story for devotees but sit outside television canon.
