About The Magnificent Seven
The Magnificent Seven (1960), directed by John Sturges and starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson, transplants Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954) to a Mexican village defended by hired gunfighters. Elmer Bernstein's theme became a landmark Western theme. Return of the Seven (1966) brings back Brynner as Chris Adams, while Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) recasts Chris with George Kennedy and The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972) closes the run with Lee Van Cleef.
The Magnificent Seven (2016), directed by Antoine Fuqua, remakes the 1960 film with Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D'Onofrio. It is a fresh adaptation rather than a sequel. A 1998 television series sits outside this theatrical film list.
Good to know
Release order matches story order closely enough that no separate chronological list is worth maintaining, since each film hires a new group of gunfighters for a new town defense. Only Chris Adams carries across the original films, played by different actors. Watch the 1960 film first for Bernstein's score and the Sturges staging, then take the sequels and the 2016 remake in the order listed.
