About Top Gun
Top Gun follows Pete Maverick Mitchell from young naval aviator competing at Top Gun school to veteran instructor training Goose son Rooster for a low altitude mission. The original centers on Maverick rivalry with Iceman and loss of Goose, while Maverick revisits guilt, aging and drone era doubt across strict flight sequences.
Maverick released in 2022 after long delays and plays as a direct sequel, not a reboot. A third film is in development at Paramount with no date set. Watch the two in release order since Maverick assumes the original deaths and call signs.
Good to know
Release order is story order with nothing to reorder. Watch the 1986 film first even if the flying looks older, because Maverick reuses its music cues and rival beats on purpose. The films share characters but not cliffhangers, so a gap between them is fine. Treat the third film as upcoming rather than counted, and refresh the list once Paramount sets a date and title.
