About WarGames
WarGames (1983) is the Cold War hacker classic: Matthew Broderick's Lightman nearly starts World War III playing with WOPR, learning that the only winning move is not to play. WarGames: The Dead Code (2008) updates the premise for the internet age with a new teen and the RIPLEY system.
The two films share a premise, not a plot: the sequel references the original's events but needs no viewing beyond it. Watch in release order for the full arc from modem tones to cyberterror. The original's NORAD set and Dabney Coleman's briefing scenes remain the gold standard for making computers cinematic.
Good to know
The Dead Code went direct to video and plays like a TV pilot that never continued, so calibrate expectations: competent update, not classic. The original's hacking holds up surprisingly well because the social engineering matters more than the tech. A television series was discussed at various points but never filmed. The duology is complete as released, with the 1983 film as the essential one.
