About William Powell
William Powell was MGM's master of urbane comedy and mystery, paired with Myrna Loy in fourteen films including six as Nick and Nora Charles. This guide picks sixteen in release order, from the pre-Code charmers Jewel Robbery and One Way Passage in 1932 and The Kennel Murder Case in 1933.
It runs through The Thin Man in 1934, Manhattan Melodrama the same year, then the great 1936 run of My Man Godfrey, The Great Ziegfeld, Libeled Lady and After the Thin Man. Later picks cover Double Wedding in 1937, three more Thin Man sequels, I Love You Again in 1940, Life with Father in 1947, and Song of the Thin Man in 1947. Release order tracks his peak.
Good to know
Powell made more than ninety screen appearances, so this is a starter pick of sixteen, not a full filmography. The Thin Man series has its own separate guide on this site, and those six titles repeat here because they anchor his screen image. Release order is the only order needed. He died in 1984, so this guide is completed.
