About Yasujiro Ozu

Yasujiro Ozu shot lower middle class family life from a low seated camera. I Was Born But from 1932 and The Only Son from 1936 close the silent era. Late Spring from 1949 starts the Noriko trilogy with Setsuko Hara, Early Summer from 1951 and Tokyo Story from 1953 complete it. Flavor of Green Tea over Rice from 1952 sits between.

Early Spring from 1956 turns pessimistic, Tokyo Twilight from 1957 darker still. Equinox Flower from 1958, Floating Weeds and Good Morning from 1959, Late Autumn from 1960, End of Summer from 1961 and An Autumn Afternoon from 1962 close the color run. Ozu died in 1963 after 50 plus films, with silents and shorts outside this core.

Good to know

Watch in release order. The Noriko trilogy of Late Spring, Early Summer and Tokyo Story shares an actress more than a plot, but the order shows the idea develop. Tokyo Story won the Sutherland Trophy and tops polls, Late Spring opens the postwar run best. Floating Weeds remakes a 1934 silent as color. Start with Tokyo Story for the peak, then Late Spring.
