About Zhang Yimou
Zhang Yimou debuted with Red Sorghum in 1987 about wartime wine makers, then Raise the Lantern in 1991 and To Live in 1994 set courtyard dramas with Gong Li. These early works use bold color for family pressure under changing China.
Hero in 2002 with Jet Li, House of Flying Daggers in 2004 and Curse of the Golden Flower in 2006 pushed wuxia scale, while The Great Wall in 2016 and Shadow in 2018 mixed effects. Full River Red in 2023 about Song court intrigue is the latest large hit with Zhang still active.
Good to know
There is no shared story to reorder since films stand alone with new casts each time. Watch Hero and Flying Daggers first for entry friendly wuxia, then try Red Sorghum for early style. Treat the run as ongoing since Zhang directs often, with Full River Red as the current endpoint. Plan extra time for finales, since later parts assume full knowledge of earlier twists.
