About Alan Bennett
Alan Bennett is a British playwright whose television work spans single plays, monologues and adaptations. This path starts with the TV film An Englishman Abroad (1983), then the six monologues of Talking Heads series one (1988) with performers like Patricia Routledge and Maggie Smith.
It continues through A Question of Attribution (1991), the six monologues of Talking Heads series two (1998), the schoolroom film The History Boys (2006, adapted from his 2004 play), and the BBC One Talking Heads remakes of 2020 with two new pieces. Each entry stands alone, so the order traces his TV career rather than a plot.
Good to know
Every entry here is self-contained, so you can sample freely, though release order shows how Bennett's voice developed. The Talking Heads monologues also exist as audio and stage texts if you want to go deeper. Start with the 1988 series for the classic set, then try series two or the 2020 remakes with Jodie Comer and Imelda Staunton.
