About Benson
Benson DuBois leaves the Tate household to run affairs for Governor Gatling, trading butler duties for budget fights and staff management. Season 1 from 1979 sets the mansion politics with Kraus sparring from the kitchen, while later seasons promote Benson to lieutenant governor and shift plots toward elections. The cast of aides, secretaries, and rivals turns over gently across the run.
The show outlasted Soap by years and grew more dramatic, though the comedy of Benson deflating pomposity never leaves. The famous finale cuts away as Benson, now running for governor himself, learns the result. Watch all seven seasons in air order, since promotions and relationships stack season on season.
Good to know
The unresolved election ending stays the talking point: three outcomes were filmed and none aired, so the result remains open by design. Soap knowledge helps the pilot but is never required, since Benson restarts its hero cleanly. Later seasons lean dramatic. Robert Guillaume anchors every year and won an Emmy for the role in 1985, a fair marker of when the show peaks.
