About Caroline in the City

Caroline Duffy draws the Caroline in the City comic strip from her Manhattan life, with animated strip inserts commenting in cutaways. Season 1 from 1995 sets the triangle of ex-husband Del, painter Annie, and handyman Richard, while season 2 from 1996 deepens the will-they tension across 22 episodes. The show aired in NBC's Thursday block.

Seasons 3 and 4 from 1997 and 1998 move Caroline toward commitment with Richard amid office and family plots. Lea Thompson leads a cast with Eric Lutes, Amy Pietz, and Malcolm Gets, and the cartoon inserts keep the strip-within-show device visible. Watch all four seasons in air order, since the romances and the comic strip evolve together.

Good to know

The animated Del sequences date the least, since the meta cartoonist device still feels fresh against standard sitcom plots. Ratings slid by season 4, so the 1999 finale hurries Caroline and Richard to the altar. The show streams as a time capsule of mid-nineties Manhattan media life, best taken as a light romantic comedy rather than appointment television.
