About Detectorists
Detectorists is a BBC comedy by Mackenzie Crook starring Crook and Toby Jones as Andy and Lance, two friends hunting treasure with metal detectors in the Essex countryside. Series one (six episodes, 2014) and series two (six episodes, 2015) aired on BBC Four, followed by a 2015 Christmas special.
Series three (six episodes, 2017) was billed as the final run, and a 75-minute Christmas special on BBC Two in December 2022 reunited the Danebury club for one last dig. Crook has said a fourth series is unlikely, so these five entries form the complete story. The show won the 2015 BAFTA for scripted comedy.
Good to know
Watch in release order with the specials where they aired, since small running threads and the closing find pay off across series. Each episode runs about half an hour, gentle and plot-light, so it suits one or two episodes at a time. The 2022 special runs 75 minutes and works as the finale, with no further episodes announced.
