About Diagnosis: Murder
Diagnosis: Murder began with three TV movies from 1992 around Dr. Mark Sloan, played by Dick Van Dyke, solving hospital murders. The series aired on CBS from October 1993 to May 2001 for eight seasons and 178 episodes with Mark's son Steve on the police beat. Two reunion movies in 2002 closed the run with the Sloans intact.
The show spun out of Jake and the Fatman with the same Sloan character, sitting apart as a backdoor start. No revival has been ordered, leaving the reunion films as the planned farewell rather than a network cut.
Good to know
Watch the three TV movies first, then seasons one through eight, then the two reunion films, since the Sloan family and the hospital staff assume sequence. The show is fully episodic around one case each, so an occasional skip harms nothing outside the finales. Later seasons lean into the action plots, which play best with the early medical years fresh.
