About Doctor Who
Doctor Who follows the Doctor, a time-traveling alien who changes faces every few years, through standalone adventures across time and space. This guide covers the 2005 revival, starting with Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor and running through Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth.
The classic 1963 to 1989 run and the 1996 film still count, but nothing in the revival requires them. Start at 2005 and the show reintroduces everything itself.
Good to know
Release order and story order are the same list, so there is one order below, grouped by Doctor. Each era is a fine jumping-on point if fifteen seasons feels like a lot, with 2005, 2010 and 2023 the most common fresh starts.
The show is currently on hiatus rather than cancelled. The 2025 finale ended with the Doctor regenerating into the likeness of Billie Piper, the next Doctor is uncast, and no new episodes are dated. The BBC says the show will return, with talk of a possible 2027 series.
