About Fawlty Towers
Fawlty Towers follows Basil and Sybil Fawlty with Polly and Manuel at a Torquay hotel. Series 1 from 1975 sets the rules with the Waldorf Salad, builders and Gourmet Night turns. Each episode traps Basil between guests, staff and his wife.
Series 2 from 1979 returns after a four year gap with Communication Problems, the Psychiatrist and the Germans run. Basil the Rat closes the show as a planned end. The 12 episodes were written by John Cleese and Connie Booth with no revival filmed, so the set plays as a closed farce.
Good to know
Watch in broadcast order with no skipping. Manuel’s English and the Major’s stories pay off across episodes, and series 2 assumes you know Basil’s temper from series 1. The Germans episode needs its 1970s context read as satire of Basil rather than of guests. Treat the 12 episodes as complete, since reunion talk never became a series.
