About Happy Valley
Happy Valley follows Sergeant Catherine Cawood in West Yorkshire after her daughter’s death. Series 1 from 2014 covers a kidnapping tied to Tommy Lee Royce across 6 episodes. Series 2 from 2016 follows Royce from prison and a new murder run.
Series 3 from 2023 closes the story 7 years later with Ryan grown and Royce pressing for contact. Sally Wainwright wrote all three as one arc, so the finale answers threads from series 1 directly. No fourth series was ordered, which leaves the three as a planned trilogy rather than an open show.
Good to know
Watch straight through in broadcast order. Royce threats only work if you carry Catherine’s loss from series 1, and series 3 reuses names and guilt from both earlier runs. Skipping series 2 breaks the prison logic that series 3 closes. Treat series 3 as the fixed end, since Wainwright has ruled out a return.
