About How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother runs nine seasons from 2005 to 2014 with Ted telling his kids the mother story from 2030. How I Met Your Father runs two seasons from 2022 to 2023 with Sophie telling her son from the near future, set in the same New York with MacLaren's pub returning. Robin and Barney cameo in the spinoff, which assumes the original's ending.
Watch the original first in full. The spinoff was cancelled in 2023 after two seasons on a cliffhanger without naming the father, so it ends unresolved by design of cancellation rather than story. Its pleasures are cameos and shared locations, which need nine seasons of context. Treat the spinoff as an optional epilogue branch.
Good to know
Release order is the only order that works. The spinoff spoils the original's mother reveal in its premise setup and returns Robin and Barney with their endings known. The original's finale stays divisive, but it must be seen before judging the spinoff's take. The spinoff's cancellation means its father mystery never pays off, so go in for the hangout episodes rather than the answer.
