About Mildred Pierce
Mildred Pierce premiered March 27, 2011 on HBO as five episodes from Todd Haynes and Jon Raymond, adapting the 1941 James M. Cain novel. Kate Winslet plays Mildred Pierce, Evan Rachel Wood plays Veda Pierce, with Guy Pearce as Monty Beragon, Melissa Leo as Lucy Gessler and James Le Gros as Bert Pierce. It opens in Depression era Glendale with divorce, job search and home pie sales.
Middle hours track waitress shifts, chicken and pie restaurant launch, Beverly Hills branch, Monty affair and Veda coloratura training with costly demands. The finale aired April 10, 2011 and closes with betrayal and a beach house reckoning. Filmed in New York with period kitchens, menus and costumes. Watch episodes 1 through 5 in order, since business funds and mother daughter debts build directly.
Good to know
Watch episodes 1 through 5 straight, since recipes, loans, property leases and singing contracts carry forward and skipping breaks who owns what. The 1945 Joan Crawford film tells the same novel as noir with a murder frame, while this version keeps Cain order and economics. Treat the five as one finished miniseries with no second season, centered on work, class and parental obligation.
