About Shogun
Shogun adapts James Clavell’s novel about English pilot John Blackthorne, shipwrecked in 1600 Japan and pulled into Lord Toranaga’s power struggle. NBC filmed it first as a five-part miniseries in 1980, and FX remade it in 2024 as a ten-episode season with Japanese dialogue and a longer political build.
The two versions cover the same book and do not connect to each other, so either works as an entry point. The FX series is the fuller and more recent telling. Its second season is filming in Vancouver with no air date, and a third season remains in development.

Watch in release order: the 1980 miniseries first, then the FX season. They are separate adaptations of the same novel, not two chapters of one story, so there is no cliffhanger between them. Season 2 is in production with no premiere date, and season 3 is in development but not locked, so this list will grow. Both versions are set around 1600.
