About Show Me a Hero

Show Me a Hero premiered August 16, 2015 on HBO as six episodes from David Simon and William F. Zorzi, adapting the 1999 Lisa Belkin book. Oscar Isaac plays mayor Nick Wasicsko, Catherine Keener plays Mary Dorman, with Winona Ryder as Vinni Restiano, Alfred Molina as Hank Spallone and LaTanya Richardson as Norma O Neal. It centers on a 1987 federal court order to build 200 low income units in white east Yonkers.

Middle hours track council votes, contempt fines, protest crowds, suit negotiations and resident moves through the 1990s, then the finale covers Wasicsko council loss, return to politics and 1993 death. It aired through August 30, 2015 with work in Yonkers. Watch episodes 1 through 6 in order, since votes, lawsuits and move in dates stack and each delay explains later anger.

Good to know

Watch episodes 1 through 6 straight, since council flips, court deadlines and resident stories carry forward and skipping breaks who votes when. The book adds reporting detail on Spallone, Dorman and the NAACP suit that the series condenses. Treat the six as one finished miniseries with no second season, focused on housing policy, local elections and neighborhood change rather than a continuing drama.
