About The Sandbaggers

Ian Mackintosh created The Sandbaggers for Yorkshire Television, airing on ITV from September 18, 1978 to July 28, 1980. Roy Marsden led as Neil Burnside with Ray Lonnen as Willie Caine and Richard Vernon as C. Mackintosh wrote all but three of the 20 episodes before his disappearance in June 1979. The series tracked the Special Operations Section through politically sensitive SIS missions with American liaison Jeff Ross.

Series 1 ran 7 episodes in 1978, series 2 ran 6 in early 1980 and series 3 ran 7 in mid 1980. The final episodes, written by others, end on an unplanned cliffhanger with Burnside outmaneuvered and Caine wounded. No revival resolves it. Watch series 1 through 3 straight through in airdate order.

Good to know

No chronological reorder is needed, as the show plays in broadcast sequence with no prequels or time jumps. The rough edge is authorship, not order. Mackintosh scripts stop before the end of series 3, so tone shifts in the last episodes. Accept the cliffhanger as the historical endpoint, since Yorkshire Television produced no fourth series.
