About The Thick of It
The Thick of It (2005 to 2012) is Armando Iannucci's Westminster panic machine: ministers flailing, advisers spinning, and Peter Capaldi's Malcolm Tucker swearing them all into line across four series and specials. The show's improvised patter makes Whitehall feel genuinely unstable.
Broadcast order throughout, with In the Loop (2009) as a film-length side story sharing the universe and Tucker. Veep continues the sensibility in Washington but is a separate continuity with its own guide. The specials between series 2 and 3 are essential, not extras: they contain some of Tucker's defining scenes.
Good to know
The show moved from BBC Four to BBC Two as it grew, which explains the production-value jump after series 2. In the Loop recasts the American characters while keeping Tucker, so it bridges to Veep's world without continuing any plot. The 2007 specials (Rise of the Nutters, Spinners and Losers) slot between series and should not be skipped. No reunion has been filmed since 2012.
