About Whitechapel

Whitechapel is a British police procedural from ITV starring Rupert Penry-Jones as DI Joseph Chandler and Phil Davis as DS Ray Miles, with Steve Pemberton as historian Edward Buchan. The team works out of London Whitechapel district and each investigation connects a present day murder to a historical crime, from Jack the Ripper to the Kray twins and later cases drawn from older London history.

The structure is simple. Series 1 (2009) and Series 2 (2010) each tell one story across three episodes, while Series 3 (2012) and Series 4 (2013) each contain three two part cases for six episodes apiece. There are no spinoffs or films to place, so broadcast order is the full story from start to finish.

Good to know

Release order and story order are the same list for Whitechapel, so there is no separate chronological order worth listing. Each series builds on Chandler and Miles as a partnership, and Series 3 and 4 assume you know them. Start with Series 1 even if the Ripper premise sounds familiar, since it sets up how the team uses historical research on every later case.
