.hack follows players trapped and scheming inside the MMO The World. Sign (26 episodes, 2002) covers Tsukasa's coma mystery, Legend of the Twilight (2003) continues with the offline meeting, Roots (26 episodes, 2006) sets up the G.U. games, and the Quantum OVAs (2010 to 2012) close the anime side.
Release order is the intended path. The games interleave with the anime but stand alone.

The G.U. Trilogy film adapts the games and is optional for anime-only viewers.
