About Japan Sinks
Japan Sinks: 2020 follows the Mutoh family after massive earthquakes sink much of Japan, across ten Netflix episodes from July 2020 directed by Masaaki Yuasa. The companion theatrical edition from November 2020 condenses the same story into a 105 minute film with some revised scenes and a different ending tone.
Release order is the guide because the series is the full story and the film is a condensed retelling. Watch the ten episode series first for character arcs and road journey detail, then view the theatrical edition as an alternate cut. The two share footage and continuity but do not need to be combined into one timeline.
Good to know
The series runs ten episodes of about 25 minutes each and includes encounters that the film drops for pace. The theatrical edition trims side characters and shortens the voyage, so it works as a recap rather than a sequel. Both versions carry strong disaster imagery that some viewers may find intense. No continuation beyond the 2020 series and film has been announced.
