About Kaiji
Kaiji is Nobuyuki Fukumoto's gambling nightmare: a deadbeat loser dragged onto the Espoir ship, then into underground pachinko, mahjong and dice games where debt means forced labor. Season 1 (2007) adapts the first arcs across 26 episodes; season 2, Against All Rules (2011), continues into the bog and mine arcs.
Watch both seasons in order; the debt and the psychology compound. The anime stops partway through the manga, which continues far beyond it, so the show is a long introduction to Fukumoto's world. The live-action films (2009, 2011, 2020) retell and then extend the story for Japanese audiences and are entirely optional for anime viewers.
Good to know
The narrator's over-explaining is the show's signature device: it teaches each game's angle shots before the trap springs, which is the pleasure, not a flaw. Season 2 assumes season 1's emotional damage, so do not skip ahead. No third season has been announced despite the manga's wealth of further arcs. Akagi shares the author and the mahjong tables but is a separate story, not a prerequisite.
