About Legend of Galactic Heroes
The original video run from 1988 to 1997 covers 110 episodes plus films about Reinhard and Yang across the Empire and Alliance war. Gaiden from 1998 to 2000 adds prequel stories about their early careers that assume you know where they end up.
Die Neue These from 2018 restarts the story with modern animation across Encounter, Stellar War, Clash and Intrusion to 2022. It covers the early books in condensed form. New viewers can start with either the OVA or Die Neue These, but should finish one version before touching the other to avoid mixing reveals.
Good to know
Watch the OVA straight through first for the full logistics and politics focus, then Gaiden as backstory. Treat Die Neue These as a separate modern take rather than season one of the same run. The remake stops partway through the books as of September 2026, so OVA watchers still hold the complete ending. Gaiden spoils OVA deaths if watched first.
