About Space Battleship Yamato
Space Battleship Yamato follows the rebuilt battleship crew under Okita then Kodai against Gamilas and later foes. The 1974 series and Farewell to Yamato from 1978 set the sacrifice template across long voyages. The 1970s films recap and extend the same crew run.
Yamato 2199 from 2012 remakes the original with 26 episodes, 2202 from 2018 continues into the Comet Empire, and 2205 from 2021 plus 3199 from 2024 carry the remake line forward. New viewers can start with either 1974 or 2199, but should finish one line before mixing reveals from the other.
Good to know
Watch the classic line first for the full Dessler arc, then the remake as a modern retelling. The 1970s compilation films can be skipped if you watch the series. The remake stops short of the full classic end as of September 2026, so classic watchers still hold the complete voyage. Gaiden style side films fit after their parent series.
