About Mamoru Oshii
Mamoru Oshii made Angels Egg in 1985 with Yoshitaka Amano as a slow church ruin story. Patlabor: The Movie followed in 1989 and Patlabor 2 in 1993 as police mech procedurals about Tokyo bay plots. Ghost in the Shell arrived in 1995 with Major Kusanagi hunting the Puppet Master.
Avalon came in 2001 as live action game warfare, Innocence in 2004 as the Ghost sequel about doll murders, and The Sky Crawlers in 2008 as looping pilot lives. The films share drones, dogs and long talks but no single plot, so release order tracks his ideas cleanly.
Good to know
Watch oldest to newest since themes return in new forms. Patlabor 1 and 2 play back to back as one police arc. Ghost in the Shell and Innocence pair as the Kusanagi run. Avalon and Sky Crawlers break the anime run as live action and war loops. No next feature has a date, so the 2008 pilot film stays last for now.
