About March Comes in Like a Lion
March Comes in Like a Lion adapts Chica Umino's manga about shogi pro Rei Kiriyama rebuilding his life around the Kawamoto family. Season one aired 22 episodes from October 2016 to March 2017 from Shaft, covering the shogi rivalries and Rei's depression. Season two aired 22 episodes from October 2017 to March 2018 with the Hina bullying arc and the Shimada title match.
The manga continues past the anime with no third season announced as of 2026, though Umino's story remains active. Shaft animated both seasons with the same staff, keeping the warm watercolor style consistent across all 44 episodes.
Good to know
Watch season one then season two in broadcast order, since Hina's arc and Rei's recovery assume the full first year. The show looks like a sports anime but plays as a depression recovery story, so expect quiet episodes between matches. To continue past the anime, pick up the manga around volume 10 where season two closes.
