About March Comes in Like a Lion
March Comes in Like a Lion follows teen shogi pro Rei living alone after family loss. Season 1 (2016) runs 22 episodes from October 8, 2016 to March 18, 2017 on the debut year and the Kawamoto house. Season 2 (2017) runs 22 episodes from October 14, 2017 to March 31, 2018 on the Hina bullying arc and the title match.
Shaft animated the NHK show from Chica Umino manga with slow shogi metaphors for grief. No third season has been announced as of 2026. Watch season 1 then season 2, since the sister trust and the Gotou grudge only land in sequence.
Good to know
Broadcast order is story order, with Rei's ranking climbs carrying straight over. Season 1 sets the shogi rules and the Kawamoto debts that season 2 reopens. Season 2 plays heavier on school bullying, so expect less board time mid run. Treat the 44 episodes as complete for now, with no film or S3 dated and the manga ahead if you want more.
