About Mononoke
Mononoke starts inside Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales in 2006, where episodes 9 through 11 form the Bakeneko arc introducing the Medicine Seller and Kayo. The 2007 series runs 12 parts across five arcs from Zashiki-warashi to a 1920s train close. The Ooku film trilogy follows with Phantom in the Rain in 2024, Ashes of Rage in March 2025 and Serpent curse in May 2026.
The films use a new Kon seller after Takahiro Sakurai left in 2023, with Hiroshi Kamiya voicing the first two. Princess Mononoke from 1997 is an unrelated Ghibli film and stays out of this path. A new project was announced after the third film with no date as of September 2026. Release order matches viewing order except anthology arcs playing standalone.
Good to know
Watch Ayakashi Bakeneko first, then the 2007 series in order, then the three films. Series arcs stand alone except episodes 3 through 5 reusing Kayo, so order matters little inside the TV run. Expect a voice change into the films by design after the 2023 recast. Manga, stage plays and novels stay optional, since the anime path closes its own loop through May 2026.
