About Overlord
Momonga stays logged in when his VRMMO shuts down and becomes Ainz Ooal Gown, an undead overlord in a world that now obeys game rules for real. Madhouse has animated four 13-episode seasons between 2015 and 2022, following Ainz from cautious exploration to open conquest as ruler of the Sorcerer Kingdom.
Release order is the viewing order. The two 2017 compilation films only recap season 1, so skip them on a first watch. The 2024 film The Sacred Kingdom is canon main story adapting light novel volumes 12 and 13, and it plays best after season 4 even though its events sit slightly earlier in the timeline.
Good to know
The Sacred Kingdom adapts the Holy Kingdom arc, which in the novels falls between material covered across season 4. Some guides place the film between season 4 episodes 7 and 8 for strict chronology, but release order keeps season 4 intact and works cleanly.
No fifth season has been officially announced as of September 17, 2026. A September 2024 leaker report claiming a greenlight spread widely but never received official confirmation from Kadokawa or Madhouse, so treat season 5 as rumor. The light novels are expected to conclude with volume 18. Short Ple Ple Pleiades comedy extras exist for completionists only.
