About Studio Ponoc
Studio Ponoc was founded in April 2015 by ex Ghibli producer Yoshiaki Nishimura. Mary and the Witch's Flower (2017) follows Mary on a broom school year from July 8, 2017. Modest Heroes (2018) packs three shorts about crab, mother and invisibility across 53 minutes from August 24, 2018. The Imaginary (2023) follows a boy and his imaginary friend Rudger from December 15, 2023, on Netflix worldwide July 5, 2024.
The three share staff and a hand drawn look, but no plot or cast carries over. Ponoc signed a multi film Netflix deal in January 2024 for future features, with no titled next film dated. Watch in release order to see the studio move from Ghibli echo to its own style.
Good to know
There is no continuity to place, as each film resets world and age group. Mary plays closest to Kiki, so Ghibli fans should start there. Modest Heroes runs under an hour and works as a middle break. Treat The Imaginary as latest released rather than final, since the Netflix pact points to more features without dates.
