About Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online started in 2012 with 25 episodes covering the Aincrad and Fairy Dance arcs, and the series kept adding to it: Phantom Bullet and Mother's Rosario in season 2, Ordinal Scale in theaters in 2017, then the long Alicization and War of Underworld run that finished in September 2020.
The newer films do not continue that story. Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night and Scherzo of Deep Night retell the first months of Aincrad in more detail than the 2012 show gave them, and Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a side story set during Phantom Bullet. The next main-line film, Integral Domain, is dated for 2028.
Good to know
There is no separate story order for Sword Art Online: the main arcs move forward in the same order they were released, so this is one list. The two Progressive films are retellings rather than sequels, listed at their release positions as optional; swap them in early only if you want a slower, floor-by-floor Aincrad. The Gun Gale Online spin-off is optional either way.
