About Barney
Barney began as Barney and the Backyard Gang direct to video from 1988 to 1991 with Sandy Duncan framing. Barney and Friends ran 14 seasons from April 6, 1992 to November 2, 2010 on PBS with 268 episodes of songs and lessons. Barney's Great Adventure arrived March 1998 theatrically with the rainbow egg hunt.
Later specials like Let's Go to the Farm and anniversary cuts sit after the series. Mattel now holds the property with a 2024 animated reboot announced separately. The original run stays episodic with new kids cycling in, so any stretch works once the video era is done.
Good to know
Videos first is the only real rule, since the TV show assumes you know Barney, BJ and Baby Bop. Inside the series, episode order barely matters beyond kid cast changes. The 1998 film works as a long episode placed after early seasons. The announced reboot restarts continuity and should be treated apart. With 268 episodes, sample by era rather than hunting every song.
