About Garfield
Garfield began as a comic strip in 1978 and reached TV with a run of CBS primetime specials starting with Here Comes Garfield in 1982. Garfield and Friends then carried the strip’s cast through seven seasons from 1988 to 1994.
Later versions split between live-action films in 2004 and 2006, three fully animated DVDs, the CGI Garfield Show from 2008 to 2016, and the animated Garfield Movie in 2024. Every version stands alone, so release order gives the cleanest tour. A new Nickelodeon series and a second animated film are in production with no dates.
Good to know
There is no shared continuity to reorder, since each Garfield show and film resets the same household. Start with the 1982 special or jump straight to Garfield and Friends for the classic run. The three DVD films and Garfield Originals shorts are optional side trips. The Garfield Movie from 2024 is the latest release and the best modern entry point for kids.
