About Altered Beast
Altered Beast starts in 1988 as an arcade belt scroll with a centurion rising to save Athena. Spirit balls turn the hero into wolf, dragon and bear forms against Neff. The Genesis port from 1989 keeps the same 5 rounds with tighter play.
Altered Beast from 2005 reboots on PS2 with Gareth and 3D beast blends. The series shares rise quotes but resets myths, so release order suits beast feel over plot. A new remake has been discussed but had no date as of September 2026, which leaves the set paused.
Good to know
Play the 1988 arcade or Genesis version first for the rise base well across rounds, then sample the rest freely. The 2005 reboot fits last as a separate take rather than a part two. Power ups need spirit ball order more than combos, so learn orb reads early. Treat the run as paused while a remake stays possible.
