Six arcade foundations.

About Atari

Atari defined early video games with single-screen rules anyone could learn in seconds. Pong turned table tennis into two paddles and a square ball in 1972. Asteroids added inertia drifting and high-score chasing in 1979. Missile Command forced triage choices across three bases in 1980.

Centipede and Yars' Revenge closed the golden run with trackball precision and layered enemy patterns that still appear in twin-stick shooters. Playing in release order shows difficulty evolving from timing to resource management to pattern recognition. Modern players should use the Atari 50 collection, which adds interviews and design documents around the original ROMs.

Good to know

Play in release order. The games have no shared story, so the sequence teaches design history rather than plot. Start with Pong for two minutes to feel the paddle physics, then spend real time with Asteroids and Missile Command. Centipede rewards longer sessions once trackball control clicks. Later Atari consoles and the 2022 anniversary collection can be explored after these six arcade foundations.
